Xiaomi 12S Ultra launched: everything you need to know

Xiaomi launched its long-awaited new flagship on Monday, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, the company’s flagship model in its 12S series in China.

The new premium smartphone features the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC and a vastly improved camera with Leica optics. In addition to the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, the Chinese smartphone maker also unveiled two other models, Xiaomi 12S Pro and Xiaomi 12S.

However, let’s take a closer look at the specifications and features of the top-of-the-range Xiaomi 12 Ultra:


The Xiaomi 12S Ultra comes with a 6.73-inch 2K (3,200 X 1,440 pixels) AMOLED LTPO display with an adaptive refresh rate up to 120 Hz, a touch frequency up to 240 Hz, a pixel density of 522 PPI, a maximum of 1,500 nits peak brightness and a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.

The screen also supports all popular HDR standards: Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. In addition, it has a DCI-P3 color gamut.


Under the hood, the new premium smartphone is powered by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, which is built on TSMC’s energy-efficient 4nm node process.

RAM and storage

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra comes with either 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM. It also has 256 GB or 512 GB UFS 3.1 internal storage.


Thanks to the new collaboration between Xiaomi and Leica, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra comes with a “Leica Summicron 1:1.9-4.1 / 13-120 ASPH camera system” for the triple camera setup at the rear with a 50 MP 1-inch Sony IMX989 image primary sensor with an f/1.9 lens.

It also features a 48MP ultra-wide camera with a 128-degree field of view and another 48MP periscopic telephoto camera that offers up to 120x zoom support, along with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) support.

Furthermore, the 12S Ultra has a 32MP selfie camera shooter on the front for selfies and video chats.

In addition to some Leica filters such as Leica Vivid, Natural, BW Natural and BW High Contrast, users can also switch between two photographic styles: “Leica Authentic Look” and “Leica Vibrant Look”.

In terms of video recording, the 12S Ultra is the first Android device with Dolby Vision HDR video recording. It supports up to 4K@60fps recording and playback.


The Xiaomi 12S Ultra has a 4,860 mAh battery that supports 67W wired and 50W wireless fast charging.

It also has a 10W reverse wireless charging support, Xiaomi Surge P1 charging chip to protect the battery from overcharging, and a Xiaomi Surge G1 battery management chip to manage battery usage for further endurance.


In terms of connectivity, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra supports 5G, Dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth v5.2, Infrared (IR) blaster, GPS with GLONASS, NFC, dual-SIM compatibility and a USB Type-C gate .


Onboard sensors include an accelerometer, ambient light, barometer, gyroscope, compass, magnetometer and proximity sensor. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra also comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor that can also be used as a heart rate sensor.

Operating system

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra runs on the Android 12 operating system and comes standard with the latest MIUI 13 custom skin.

Other possibilities

The new premium smartphone includes a linear vibration motor on the X-axis, a 3D cooling system, symmetrical stereo speakers tuned by Harman Kardon and has Dolby Atmos certification. It is also IP68 dust and water resistant.

Dimensions and weight

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra measures 163.17 x 74.92 x 9.06 mm and weighs 225 grams.

Prices & Availability

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra is available in Classic Black and Verdant Green and both have a leather-like finish on the back. The price of the smartphone starts at CNY 5,999 for the base 8GB + 256GB storage option. Furthermore, the 12 GB + 256 GB and 12 GB + 512 GB storage options are priced at CNY 6,499 and CNY 6,999 respectively.

Currently, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is only on sale in China. It is unknown when it will be available for sale in other parts of the world.
