Wordle into a multiplayer board game

Wordle board game

Wordle, the popular online word guessing game that took the internet by storm, is now being transformed into a multiplayer board game that can now be played with family and friends.

Hasbro, Inc., a global game and entertainment player, and The New York Times Games are teaming up to bring Wordle to life in a new board game called “Wordle: The Party Game.”

For the inexperienced, the “original” Wordle game was created by former Reddit software engineer Josh Wardle so he and his partner can play it before it’s finally made public in October 2021. The game became hugely popular in December 2021 after Wardle introduced the ability for players to copy their daily results as emoji squares, which were widely shared on Twitter.

In January 2022, the game was purchased by The New York Times Company for an undisclosed seven-figure sum with plans to keep it free for all players. It was later moved to the company’s website in February 2022.

“Ever since Wordle came on the scene, it has undoubtedly been a staple of social and pop culture vocabulary,” said Adam Biehl, SVP & General Manager, Hasbro Gaming. “We are beyond excited to partner with New York Times Games to bring our game worlds together and expand Wordle in new ways.”

Jonathan Knight, Head of Games for The New York Times, said: “Wordle really brought us together and that’s what makes it so special. With each daily puzzle, we are connected with friends and family through social play. At New York Times Games, we focus on high-quality puzzles that everyone can experience together, which is why we are so excited to partner with Hasbro to bring a fresh new format to the global sensation of Wordle.”

So, how do you play the Wordle: The Party Game? In each round, a player designated as the Wordle Host will write down a secret word. Just like in the original Wordle game, all players are given six attempts to guess a five-letter word.

After each guess, the letters are either marked green, yellow or gray by the Wordle Host; green means the letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means the letter is in the answer but not in the correct position, and gray means the letter is not in the answer at all.

Since the players compete against each other in this game, the fewer attempts a player takes to guess the word, the fewer points he scores. At the end of the game, the player with the fewest points wins!

You can play Wordle: The Party Game repeatedly with the included dry-erase markers or small Wordle dry-erase boards. Players can also change gameplay in Wordle in four different ways: classic, fast, timed, or teams.

Wordle: The Party Game is now available for pre-order at www.wordlethepartygame.com for $19.99. The game will ship in North America approximately on October 1, 2022, an estimated date that is subject to change.
