The Cisco IOS monolithic kernel does not provide memory protection for data from individual processes. The fictitious destination address is translated to the primary storage as a whole. The Cisco IOS kernel does not do any storage shifting or flipping.
As a result, the operating system’s accessible storage is limited to the memory space of the access point on which it is installed. Multiple virtual memory items can be proxyed to the same memory space in IOS. That design was created by Cisco to ensure system efficiency while minimizing system operating costs.
The downside of the IOS design is that it adds to the complexity of the overall program; data leakage is conceivable, as one program can inherit content from another, and one function can destabilize the entire operating system or even cause an application to collapse.
