The new version of Winamp is here after four years of development

Winamp, one of the best media players for PCs, has released a new version as Release Candidate build after four long years. The new version, WinAmp Release 5.9 RC1 Build 9999, is compatible with Windows 11.

For those away from home, Winamp is a media player for Microsoft Windows originally developed by Justin Frankel and Dmitry Boldyrev through their company Nullsoft. Version 1 of Winamp was released in 1997 and quickly became popular with over 3 million downloads. It was later acquired by AOL in 1999 and then by Radionomy in 2014.

Best known for its simple user interface, Winamp offers music visualization, playlist and media library and supports extensibility with plugins and retro skins.

What’s New in Winamp 5.9 RC1 Build 9999

The new version of Winamp is the first update to the popular legendary player since Winamp v5.8 Beta, which was released in 2018. It includes support for Windows 11 and introduces new features such as an updated interface, improved playback of audio streams and podcasts, library management, and improved support for both the VP8 codec and the M38 codec.

The release also upgrades the code base from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2019. Also, Winamp now requires Windows 7 SP1 as the minimum operating system required, eliminating support for Windows XP and Vista. The new version also includes optimization and a number of bug fixes and improvements.

“This is the culmination of 4 years of work since the release of 5.8. Two development teams, and a pandemic-induced hiatus in between,” read the changelog for Winamp 5.9 RC1 Build 9999.

“To the end user, it may not seem like a whole lot of changes, but the biggest and most difficult part was actually migrating the entire project from VS2008 to VS2019 and getting it all built successfully.

“The foundation has now been laid and we can now concentrate more on features. Whether it’s repairing/replacing old ones or adding new ones.”
