I often come across the scenario that I accidentally delete a message in iMessage app and want to see the deleted messages on my iPhone. There was a way to retrieve deleted messages on iPhone using iCloud backup. Now thanks to Apple’s new iOS 16 update that allows users to recover deleted messages on iPhone 2022.

At the WWDC 2022 event in June, Apple launched iOS 16 with some great improvements in the iMessage app. The new upgrade on iMessage with iOS 16 allows users to edit, undo, unread and check recently deleted messages on iPhone with few taps. There is no need for iCloud or any third-party app to check deleted messages on your iPhone if you have iOS 16. The new update is still subject to the beta issue and the final version will land in September 2022. if you have installed iOS 16 beta on your iPhone, you may see a delete message. Let’s see how.

Like Recently Deleted feature in Photos app, Apple has added new Recently Deleted feature to iMessage app to view or recover deleted messages on iPhone. This new section is hidden somewhere in the messaging app.

You can see deleted messages on iPhone in iOS 16 in the Edit option on the top left corner of the message main view, then you will see the new option “Show recently deleted”. When you tap on this new option, the history of all deleted messages will be displayed. It would help if you keep in mind that this deleted message can be recovered within 30 days of the period. After 40 days, the deleted message will disappear permanently from the Recently Deleted section of the iMessage app.

Since iOS 16 is currently in beta 1 stage, we may get changes or improvements to the iMessage app in the iOS 16 public beta and on the final release of stable iOS 16 with the iPhone 14 launch this fall.
